Buying guide for mechanical engineering students

The following are the specs or buying tips you must consider before buying any laptop for yourself.

1. Size and weight. 

Being a mechanical student we have to go from one class to another. From class to lab, or lab to the workshop, a student doesn't sit the whole time in college, so it is good to have a laptop small and compact so that it fits your backpack as well as be light in weight so that it would be less burden carrying around.

So an ideal size and weight would be 14''inch screen size laptop with around 1.5kg weight.

2. Display.

It is the place where you will be staring all the time using your laptop and for a mechanical engineering student when using designing and modelling software colour accuracy is quite important. Also, when watching videos, movies or online lectures, a good display is necessary.

A look for at least a full HD IPS display. An OLED or QLED display is good but is expensive. Don't opt for a TN or VA panel as they have terrible viewing angles and don't have good colour reproduction.

3.RAM. 

As mechanical students, we come across heavy weight software like Autocad inventor, Ansys, Solidworks, Catia etc which require a good amount of power.

So look for a minimum of 8GB ram. Although we recommend 16GB ram to be a little future proof. If not, you can check out a laptop which you can upgrade to 16GB later on.

4.Processor 

Intel or AMD you can opt for any brand you want but, the processor must have 4 or more core and the boost speed must be above 3.6GHz at least.

The more the cores and faster the speed of the core, the better is the processor.

In a budget go for 4 cores and if you can afford you can opt for 6 or 8 cores according to your workload. Usually, if you are dealing with assemblies with around 100+ parts, then you must opt for 8 cores minimum.

5.Graphics.

All that you see on your screen is due to the graphics card. Now a days many laptops come with integrated graphics but try avoiding them. Opt for a dedicated graphics card as it would boost the performance.

Look for at least 2GB dedicated graphic card. However, now a days 4GB has become the baseline.

The minimum we recommend is a 4 GB dedicated graphics card of Nvidia 1650 or 1650 super.

You might be thinking after reading this that why I've included gaming laptops extensively in the list. The reason is that I have preferred performance while making this list so that you can complete your work smoothly. 

The ultrabooks are usually light in weight. But a disadvantage is that they come with a very basic graphic card i.e MX 250 or MX 350  for the same price as that of the gaming laptop.
